Catch Kathryn Ezzy live at Rattlers this Saturday

Kathryn Ezzy, previously known as Pickworth from George's Valley in Tzaneen and currently staying in Australia, is visiting her hometown for friends and family and playing a gig at Rattlers on Saturday. CATCH HER LIVE, TIME: 18:00, and ENTRY: R60

“I started my musical journey when I was in Tzaneen. I started with a recorder when I was 8, which my music teacher taught me at the time. When I got braces I could not play the recorder anymore, I hated the recorder, but I loved music. So I moved to the piano at 10, then the guitar at 12. I did not have a teacher to teach me how to play the guitar, so I taught myself.

We moved to Johannesburg when I was 14, where we stayed for five years, and immigrated to Australia to the Northern Territory, Darwin. I finished high school there through distance education. I then went to study teaching at Charles Darwin University with music being my major module,” she said. Kathryn formed a band called Kathryn and the Overbytes at the end of 2019. “I started playing at Darwin and we had a lot of gigs and bookings, but some got cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19.

We won two competitions which gave us a chance to represent the Northern Territory at the Early Beach Festival of Music in Queensland at the end of 2021. We competed in the finals of this competition,” says Kathryn. “Our trip to South Africa is very exciting for me, I haven’t been back in six years, and I will be seeing my family and friends, so I just thought to myself, ‘why not play a gig’. I hope to also catch up with people who still remember me since I will be in town for a very short time,” she added.

She studied music for two years at the University, majoring in piano. “So I studied classical piano, and I finished my teaching degree and graduated from that, which took me five years, a year longer than usual because of the complications with the degree during that time, I continued to play guitar, sing, and also wrote songs. My songwriting journey started at the age of 12 or 13 while I was still in Tzaneen, and I now work as a high school teacher in Darwin,” Kathryn explains.

“In the last few years, I became the head of the Arts Department. I’m in charge of the music, drama, dance, and visual arts, and last year I directed our school musical, we performed a rendition of The Lion King,” concluded Kathryn. Doors open at 18:00 and entry is R60.
