Power boxes and streetlights targeted in Tzaneen

Unlocked power boxes and faulty streetlights in Tzaneen are causes for concern this festive season since house break-ins are expected to increase during this time.

In Aqua Park faulty streetlights are found in at least ten streets.
In Bert Booysen Street, Aqua Avenue, Annecke Street, Rudolph Viljoen Street, Gerrit Kruger Street, Gilliland Street, Dekenah Street, Boel Senekal Street, Pieter Joubert Street and Rudolf Viljoen Street faulty streetlights were reported to the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) before December 6.

In Arbor Park faulty streetlights in Essenhout Street and Geelhout Street was reported to the GTM for repairs on the same day. In addition, two unlocked electrical boxes, one in Gilliand Street and one situated in Douglas Street, was reported to the GTM. An unlocked electrical box is an easy target for tampering and vandalism by criminals.

On December 6 Vutivi Makhubela, spokesperson for the GTM, said that the streetlights are being attended to and that repairs to these faulty lights have started.
“If the streetlights are not working it could only mean they’re faulty.
“Yes, they will be fixed before Christmas, I did say they have already started,” said Makhubela.

The following maintenance schedule was received from GTM on 14 December:

Aquapark all streets
(14 Dec 2023 to 23 Dec 2022)

(14-15 Dec 2022)

Highmast in Lenyenye and all villages

Medipark all streets

“Please note that time frames are also determined by availability of resources. I am not sure to whom and when the electricity boxes were reported, but I have registered the complaint to the department and they will attend to it as soon as possible and will provide feedback . It is true that the matter is of serious concern and should be addressed asap,” says Makhubela.
