Three lives lost in a multiple vehicle crash

Three people were killed and three others escaped with serious injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash involving three trucks and a loading van on the R578 road at Mbhokota Village outside Elim.

It is alleged that a truck heading East had brakes failure and collided head-on with another truck. A loading Van and truck heading in the same direction crashed into the rear end of the truck. The driver of the loading van and two people from a truck were killed instantly. The road between Elim and Bungeni was closed, emergency personnel arrived on the ground clearing the wreckage from the road.

Motorists travelling between Louistrichardt and Giyani are advised to be cautious on the road or use alternative routes until the road is cleared. Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya is worried about the number of fatal crashes on the road ahead of the Easter holidays.

The same stretch has claimed five lives during the festive season in another multiple car crash involving a truck and three light vehicles. Brake failure was also cited as a possible cause of the accident. The MEC is urging motorists to check the condition of their vehicles before they embark on their journeys. “As the department, we are concerned about the road carnage caused by unroadworthy vehicles.

We are heading to Easter and I urge motorists, especially public transport operators and truck drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy. Our operations will be very tight and we will impound vehicles that are not fit to be on our roads” MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya.
