Nkowankowa Community Games alive once again

The Rich Gang managed to defend their title at the 2021 Nkowankowa Community Games (NCG) recently.

The local soccer team managed to do this after smashing Nkowankowa XI 3-1 in the finals taking the title for the fifth time.
The 2021 games were a bit different as the Dream Team, the Rich Gang’s long standing rival, did not take part in the games.
These two teams have been meeting in the finals in recent years, always trying to prove who is the better team.
One of the highlights of the 2021games was when Kurisani ‘Pienaar’ Mbhalati, was voted player of the tournament.

He however felt his team mate Skhumbuzo ‘Sgagi’ Mnisi, deserved it more.
He immediately handed over the trophy to him.
As usual four soccer teams participated including Dan United, the Legends and Nkowankowa XI.
In 2020 the popular sporting event took a break due to Covid-19 regulations at the time.

This was their first game since 2019. Due to the Covid setback, other sporting codes which normally takes place during the same event, were also affected.
The 12th edition of the NCG only had three sporting codes which were a 6km fun walk, soccer and cycling.
“The tournament wasn’t as well planned as per usual because of the uncertainty of the lockdown regulations come the day of the match.
“But to our surprise we remained in level one, which was a relief.

“For the first time we had cycling as an activity and we had about 30 cyclists who cycled for 65km,” explained Kiekie Mboweni, a member of the organising committee.
Commentators, Mixo Kubayi and Happy Mathye once again kept the spectators entertained with their jokes and commentary.

The committee is urging the community to take advantage of the platform and enter in as many sporting codes as possible.
Mboweni said their aim is to grow the event but teams have to register in time for better planning. He further thanked the sponsors, spectators and the whole community for their love and support throughout thes years.
