Houses, tavern and cars set alight in Letsitele

A tavern, two houses and two cars were set alight at Mandlakazi village near Letsitele in the early hours of Monday.

This after enraged members of the community accused the owners of the properties of being responsible for the death of a man who was found dead in his sleeping room last week.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said violence erupted on Sunday evening but police managed to bring the situation under control.

“In the early hours of Monday, community members went on a rampage setting fire on properties belonging to people believed to have been responsible for the death of a local man,” said Ngoepe.

The damage to the destroyed properties, which include a double story house is estimated at millions of rands.

Police have opened cases of public violence, arson, malicious damage to property and assault with intend to do grievous bodily harm for investigations.

No one had been arrested at the time of going to press but Ngoepe said they were following several positive leads to arrest the perpetrators.
