Are you brave enough for ‘spooktacular’ fun?

The second annual Snake Park in the Dark Halloween event promises to be a hit with lots of ‘spooktacular’ fun.

The event is hosted by Hoedspruit Reptile Centre and is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 30. Entrance will be R180 per person attending and will include entrance to the park, dinner, trick or treating.

“Keeping with tradition there will be numerous stations around the park where participants, dressed in spooky attire will be asked to trick or treat. At each station, there will be a quiz question and if the question is answered correctly the participant will be delighted with a treat, if the participant answers incorrectly then they must fulfil a challenge in order to acquire their treat,” said organiser Chris Cooke.

He said participants will be encouraged to discover the park and its animals at night by bringing their own torches.

“Whilst scary, creepy crawlies are the name of the game no animals are used to scare, we rather use the nocturnal event to help educate participants about the nightlife of our animals in a fun and light-hearted way,” he said.

Cooke said the best-dressed boy and girl will win a prize to be announced after the event and all participants are to be encouraged to share their photographs on social media with the hashtag #snakeparkinthedark. “The best picture will also win a prize to be announced after the event.

Be sure to join us for a great spooktacular event. It will definitely be one for the books,” he said. Last year, over 100 people attended and were treated to a snake dissection on a large southern African python (Python natalensis) that had been killed on an electric fence.

Cooke told Herald that they came up with the idea to host the event at the reptile centre because people are generally scared of reptiles, amphibians and arachnids. “What better place to hold a Halloween party than Hoedspruit Reptile Centre. We wanted to use the occasion to educate and inform with fun and in exciting circumstances. Even in the dark, these animals are not as creepy as everyone believes,” he said.
