Disabled woman in wheelchair raped in Hoedspruit

A 48-year-old man appeared at the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 27 for allegedly raping a 51-year-old disabled woman who is wheelchair-bound and also mentally challenged.

Hoedspruit police spokesperson, Sgt Livhuwani Mulaudzi, said the matter occurred on Saturday, September 25 at the Oaks village around 18:00.

“According to the information received, a woman left her wheelchair-bound mother-in-law at home as she cannot walk when she went to a party on Saturday. When she returned around 18:00 to check up on her, she caught the man busy raping the woman,” she said.

Mulaudzi said the woman called for help. Her neighbours responded and the alleged rapist was caught.

“They called the police and apprehended him. We would like to thank the community members for working with the police by not taking the law into their own hands. “Some people would have resorted to taking the matter into their own hands especially considering the victim’s condition,” she said.

She said the community did well by calling the police because the man will face the full might of the law and the victim will receive justice for the pain she has suffered. The man has been remanded in custody and he will re-appear on Monday, October 4 for a formal bail application.
