Hoedies enjoy trail running

Participants in the Lowveld Trail Running event last Saturday were spoilt to a great view of the Mariepskop mountain.

This child-friendly race aims to build a trail running community in Hoedspruit and surroundings.

It affords trail enthusiasts an opportunity to explore nature whilst keeping fit and exploring areas that many don’t get to enjoy.

Organiser Belinda Barkas told Herald that Covid-19 has played havoc with their 2020 race calendar.

“We usually host several events throughout the year, but due to the pandemic the planned events were unfortunately cancelled,” she said.

Barkas said the run which started at Franklyn Park was their first event under Covid-19 and they were able to host it due to some lifting of lockdown restrictions.

Following Covid-19 protocols, participants were provided with hand sanitiser.

Trail running enthusiasts were spoilt with three runs to choose from with the shortest distance being a 5km run followed by 10km and 20km.

She said they were happy with the attendance considering the current situation.

“We had 64 entries in total, our numbers usually range from 100 and 150,” she said.

Barkas said they will be offering trail clinics in the new year.

“All information regarding our events and clinics will be available on our Facebook page. We encourage individuals to join this platform, Lowveld Trail Running,” she said.

The event ended with a prize giving ceremony to winners of all categories.

Barkas said they have a full calendar of events for next year.
