UPDATE: Tzaneen doctor guilty of rape appeals conviction

 Dr Dumisani Chauke was released on a R20 000 bail by the Nkowankowa Regional Court, after appealing the rape conviction.

This comes after the court on Tuesday 3 November, sentenced him to an effective eight (8) years imprisonment for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in 2017.

The defence, on behalf of the accused brought an application for leave to appeal, immediately following the sentencing proceedings.

“The accused was released on condition that should the appeal not succeed, the accused must hand himself to the Clerk of the Court at the Nkowankowa Magistrate Court, within 14 days of him becoming aware of the outcome of the appeal.

“In addition, the accused has to report once a week at the Ritavi police station every Monday with effect from Monday, 9 November between the hours 08:00 and 16:00 until his appeal is finalised.

“The accused may also not leave Limpopo without the prior permission of the investigating officer,” concluded Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, communication manager for NPA Limpopo.
