Dam levels remain dire

Despite recent torrential rains, the situation remains dire in the Mopani district where three major dams, Tzaneen, Middel-Letaba and Modjadji continue to be below 20%.

According to the department of water and sanitation’s (DWS) weekly report, recent torrential rains helped to stabilise average dam levels to 63%, but most dams continued to drop their levels by a percentage week-on-week.

There is a continuing water challenge in Giyani where its supply dam, MiddelLetaba, recorded 0,9%.

The area is still in the throes of a debilitating drought. However, this has prompted DWS to continue the call for water users across the spectrum to maintain their water saving practices until the expected good summer rains start.

The province currently occupies the middle of the table at 58% from 58,6%.

The figure represents seven percent improvement compared to the corresponding period last year when it was 51,3%.

The torrential rains helped four of the province’s dams – Mutshedzi, Hans Merensky in Phalaborwa, Magoebaskloof between Boyne and Tzaneen, and Vergelegen dams to reach 100% capacity.
