Young siblings enjoy to farm on their land

Three siblings from Tzaneen, Kallie, Wisani and Benson Mabunda, have taken over their father Jan’s farm and are currently in their first production season with tomatoes, green beans, beetroot and mustard spinach.

They farm in the Gavaza and Mafarana villages and have started selling their produce to surrounding communities.

Since this is their first production season, they have relied on the advice of their father and the services of the local agricultural extension officer from Berlin.

Despite the restrictions that Covid-19 had on their activities, they are encouraged by their first crop, explained Kallie.

A small portion of the cultivated two hectares is under drip line irrigation, while a considerable portion is being irrigated through the furrow method.

This method is labour intensive and exposes the farm to soil erosion as it is located below on a slope.

The siblings are determined to improve their standard of living through their farming, they said.

The ideal according to Kallie would be to have 6 hectares which would allow them to create jobs.

“We would like to improve on our farming practices to a stage where we can produce under a shade net.

That would increase the quality of our produce as chances of pests and diseases would be minimised,” said Kallie.
