Tzaneen driver, a National Rally Champion

Local motor sport champion and Automotive Mechanic, Peter Pilusa, brought home three trophies from the Arro Rally Championships in Boukenhout Kloof in Pretoria over the past weekend.

Pilusa was named the 2018 Overall National Champion in Class C, he also received a trophy for the Best Historic Vehicle for his 1991 Nissan Sentra and a trophy in Class C for position three.

The competition was in two stages on both tar and gravel routes.

His love for motor sport was not instant, he used to drive bikes as a hobby until 2009 when he developed the love for motorsport.

His passion was stirred up by the late racing driver, Gugu Zulu’s visit to Tzaneen, who was one of the few blacks actively involved in the sport in South Africa and ever since he has never looked back.

“Zulu inspired me to not doubt myself and the journey has been awesome,” Said Pilusa.

He attributes his success to local drivers Eddie Simpson and Mohammed Moosa, who helped mentor him into the sport.

He currently has 168 trophies to his name and says more are still coming.

During working hours he is training young and upcoming mechanics at his mechanic school, Vision Automotive Training in the Tzaneen Indusrial area.

“My wish is to see my students become more than mechanics and follow in my footsteps and become great rally drivers.

The champion says he wants to denounce that motorsports its for whites or for males only and he is inviting people of all races and gender to come to join the sports and says he is there to help train them.

He also added that he would not be a success without his sponsors, he sent special words of gratitude to Midas for sponsoring him with lubricants, Nissan BB Motors for supplying him with fuel and S&J Auto for sponsoring him with pocket money.

He pleads to more local businesses to assist with more sponsorship as the sport cost a lot of money.

Pilusa concluded by acknoledging his wife, Mavis Pilusa together with their children for the support and he says family comes first over everything.
