Haenertsburg Rotary Club’s Family Health Days: Get the lowdown right here

Haenertsburg Rotary Club will be hosting their annual Rotary Family Health Days next week, and here is everything you need to know.

Every year Rotary clubs hailing from 10 countries all over Africa plus India embark on a special project known as Family Health Days.

This project is aimed at educating the general population by providing free health services such as Tuberculosis (TB) screening, HIV counselling and testing, raising Breast Cancer awareness and eye tests.

The project started out in 2011 and has since helped the lives of over 1.5 million people according to the Rotarians for Family Health & AIDS Prevention, Inc. website.

This year, the theme of the project is ‘She Conquers’, focusing on girls aged between 14 and 20 years old.
Among other issues and topics, the ‘She Conquers’ campaign will look at encouraging girls within these age parameters to stay in school, informing them about rape and HIV & AIDS.
The vision of the project is to help the lives of 5 million by 2020.
Rotary Family Health Days in South Africa are run in partnership with the Department of Health and are supported by many NGOs and civil organisations, such as CHoiCe Trust who will yet again be a major contributor, offering the Breast Cancer awareness talks in Haenertsburg this year.
Our local Rotary Family Health Days will this year be taking place in Haenertsburg Village, on the grass parking area opposite the Iron Crown Pub & Bistro.
They will be from Tuesday, October 3 until Thursday, October 5 between the hours of 09:00-15:00.
Some of the services on offer this year include:
  • Vitals checks (blood pressure, minor ailments, etc.)
  • Immunisation for babies & children (must bring their Road to Health Cards)
  • Blood sugar
  • Men’s Health and Medical Male Circumcision advice
  • TB screening & HIV counselling and testing
  • ‘She Conquers’ programme aimed at girls and young women
  • Breast Cancer awareness & information (offered by CHoiCe Trust)
  • Condom distribution
  • Eye Testing (definitely on the Thursday) but they are hoping to have this service every day
  • Dental checkups (to be confirmed)
Haenertsburg Rotary Club convener for the Family Health Days programme, Ruth Stuart-Thompson, is hoping to have a successful year this year.
“I look forward to a successful and beneficial programme,” said Ruth.
