Ba-Phalaborwa hosts municipal games

Thousands of municipal workers from across Limpopo Province took part in this year’s Internal–Municipal Sport of South Africa (IMSSA) Limpopo games which was held at the Ba-Phalaborwa area.

These annual games which was established in 2007 were part of municipal wellness initiative that encourages healthy lifestyle, fostering community involvement and creating social platform for municipal employees. These games were hosted by different municipality under bidding system and municipalities participate in different sporting codes upon with the host municipality, which in the 2017 Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality was the host.

The following facilities which included amongst others Lulekani Stadium, Hans Merensky and Impala Park Stadium were used as the official venues for these games.

The municipal employees battled it out in different sporting codes which encompassed soccer, netball, volley ball, golf, tennis, and darts among others.

Ba-Phalaborwa team were labelled as  a “bunch of losers” after they failed to find the back of net from all sporting codes, let alone in fishing.

However, the acting Municipal Manager, Maite Moakamela said the municipality was proud and honoured to have hosted these games and believed that these matches had boosted the economy of Ba-Phalaborwa.

“As thousands of people visited our town, we have received major economic boost for our local businesses and hospitality industry, all the lodges were fully booked,” explained Moakamela.

Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality hosted the games in partnership with South African Local Government (SALGA) together with Internal- Municipal Sport of South Africa).
