A GNT bus goes off the road, again

A Great North Transport (GNT) bus veered off the road and collided with trees on the R36 Lydenburg road this morning.

The bus was on its way from Tzaneen, when it suddenly went off the road and came to a standstill next to trees on the road.

The bus driver refused to comment on what might have caused the accident, and told the Heralds, journalist, ‘Cant you see what happend?’

GNT officials, present at the scene, were also not willing to comment.

‘I am not going to say anything, because the Herald is just writing bad things about the company,’ the official said, claiming that he is the deputy director of GNT.

The bus was not carrying any passengers.

Patrick Monkoe, Marketing and Communications Manager at GNT said to the Herald that in regards to the accident this morning, “Preliminary investigations are still underway.’

Earlier in March, the Herald reported on another GNT bus accident on the Georgesvalley road, in which ten people died, when the bus they were traveling in overturned. The commuters were all residents from Makhushane, Mashishimale, Khashane, Xitlakati, Mariveni, Nkowankowa and Ramotshinyadi from Moria.

Another accident also claimed the live of a woman on the Deerpark road late last year, after a GNT bus accident

The GNT bus accidents raised questions on their road worthiness.

The Herald reported that Law enforcement officials inspected GNT buses in their depots in the Mopani district.

In both Giyani and Tzaneen, 35 buses were inspected and 19 were found to have minor defects.

In Phalaborwa 12 buses were also taken off the road in March, subject to mechanical defects having been identified by the inspection teams.
