Hoedies don finest pinks for Tekkies4Tieties walk

Despite the heat, Hoedspruit residents came out in their numbers to support Hlokomela's Tekkies4Tieties event at Bosveld Village.

People from all walks of life in their finest shades of pink showed their unwavering support for the fight against cancer. “The walk brought together community members who had personally been affected by cancer, as well as those who wished to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and support,” said MJ Du Preez, one of the organisers. “One could not help but be moved by the sea of pink, a symbol of solidarity, resilience, and a common goal to eradicate this formidable disease.”

The Tekkies4Tieties fun walk, now only in its second year, is a beacon of hope and inspiration for the Hoedspruit community to promote awareness about cancer, honouring cancer survivors, and remembering those who have lost their lives to the disease. Du Preez said participants and onlookers alike were touched by the numerous messages of support and remembrance. “Many individuals wore shirts bearing the names and photos of their loved ones who had recently lost the battle to cancer.

These tributes served as a reminder of the importance of early detection and ongoing research,” he said. Local businesses and sponsors also joined in by providing refreshments, prizes, and financial support. Although the walk was free of charge, participants were called on to make donations towards the cause or to buy a raffle ticket to win one of the many prizes donated. Du Preez expressed his gratitude for the continued support from the community.

“This event grows each year, and it’s heartwarming to see how much our community cares about this cause. “The funds raised will make a big difference in the lives of people who don’t have the means to afford the costs associated with the route to care when they are diagnosed with cancer. “Much like the Springboks that united a country yet again on Saturday evening, the annual Hlokomela Tekkies4Tieties fun walk serves as a reminder that when communities unite, they can achieve remarkable things,” he concluded.
