Light at end of Eiland ‘tunnel’

Construction on the disintegrated and pothole-riddled Eiland road from Letsitele has started.

The road is being constructed in a public-private partnership between the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure and Palabora Mining Company (PMC), said Witness Tiva of the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in Limpopo.

This comes after Limpopo’s Public Works MEC, Nkakareng Rakgoa, and the Mopani District Municipality executive mayor, Pule Shayi, was joined by PMC’s management and the late Kgoshi Selwane in a sod-turning ceremony in October last year.  Three kilometers of the road has already been completed.

During the sod-turning ceremony, the MEC said that PMC initiated the work through its social responsibility programme. The P43/3 road, also known as the D3260, has been a huge problem for motorists for many years with the road riddled with potholes. It had totally disintegrated in some places.

The Herald has been reporting on the Road Agency Limpopo’s (RAL) plans to repair the road for the last few years with many empty promises from the agency that the road is to be rehabilitated. During her 2023/24 budget speech, Rakgoale referred to progress on road maintenance work in the Mopani district. “We are currently in the design stage for roads D548 Georges Valley from R36 in Tzaneen to R71 Haenertsburg, and the designs on the P43/3 road leading from Letaba Ranch to Eiland are completed.”
