Local in top three Boerewors Championship Competition

A local man, Tshepo Molebatsi has been selected as one of the winners of the Gauteng Championship Boerewors first round event held at Shoprite Checkers Office Park in Centurion on Friday.

It was a fun-filled day for the whole family; however, the main attraction on the day was the sizzling excitement of the competition.

The three winners; Tshepo Molebatsi from Tzaneen, Leonard Mavundla (Soweto, Gauteng) and Samson Mapoisa Mashaine (Kwagafontein, Mpumalanga) were all selected after rigorous blind taste tests by the judges. They will continue and compete in the Top 18 round.

All three of them received gift hampers from sponsors; Coca Cola, All Gold and Simba as well as vouchers that can be used at Shoprite or Checkers stores.

The annual Championship Boerewors Competition is now in the Champion Round stages with the first three events taking place this past Saturday, the next three events will be on 18 July.

The six events see over 650 recipes braaied nationwide to find South Africa’s Top 18 Boerewors recipes. These recipes will go on to contend for the grand prize of being crowned the Championship Boerewors winner for 2015 and a Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body L45.

This year has seen the format of the competition change and for the first time ever the public will vote for the winner during a Top three showdown.

The South African Chefs Association (SACA), a recognised authority on food in South Africa, takes charge of the judging processes and makes sure that all entries adhere to the guidelines for making truly traditional boerewors.

Shoprite and Checkers are proud of SA’s boerewors tradition and celebrate it every year by hosting the Championship Boerewors competition. The supermarket chains’ butcheries are famous for exceptional meat products and the group is always looking for new recipes and ideas in order to offer consumers the best in quality and variety. The annual Championship Boerewors competition plays a pivotal role in helping the group to achieve this aim.
