Colourful cricket at Plasies

History was made on May 20 when the Merensky SRE Cricket Club hosted a T15 tournament at Plasieland’s cricket oval.

Four teams, the Vikings, Spartans, Knights, and Warriors played elimination matches in order to determine which two teams would face each other in the final. Interesting additions to the game rules were double runs when batsmen hit a boundary through the cones and two power-play innings during which runs were also doubled.

The Spartans won all their group games, while the other three teams were tied with one win each. The organisers took the run average into account after which the Vikings advanced to the final. In a titanic battle, the Spartans batted first and put 99 runs on the scoreboard. On the last ball of the game, during the power-play, the Vikings were 20 runs short.

As fate would have it, the last ball was a foul ball and consequently had to be bowled again, plus a “free hit”. Batsman, Luan Verster, was in front of the wickets, and with a big 6 between the cones he scored the winning runs for the Mopani Vikings. The best fielder was PG Botes, who was honoured for good catches, energetic fielding, and a run-out.

Timothy Baker, with 4 wickets to his name, was the best bowler, while Rinaldo Bornman earned the title of best batsman with 199 runs. Hein de Beer was the supporter who took advantage of the catch of the day. SRE Cricket thanked their sponsors, directors, coaches, referees, scorekeepers, parents, and players for a successful, action-packed day of cricket.
