Community mourns the tragic death of chief

Messages of condolences are pouring in from all corners of the country after the sudden passing of Kgoshi Tebogo Philip Malatji (Chief Selwane).

The traditional leader passed away after a fatal car accident on the Selwane road on Sunday night, May 14. According to the police, three people died and five were injured after an oncoming car collided with his car and overturned next to Mathipa Mountain. Both drivers died at the scene of the accident.

Phalaborwa Municipality mayor, Merriam Malatji, said the untimely death is a huge loss to the people of Selwane and the community at large. “We have lost a man of integrity, vision, and an astute leader in our community who was always at the forefront of community development.” Malatji together with her team also paid a courtesy visit to the traditional house to convey their condolences.

Meanwhile, Limpopo’s premier, Chupu Mathabatha, together with the provincial executive, is among the dignitaries who sent tributes to the royal house. On Tuesday, May 23 the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu, visited the Malatji family to formally convey their condolences.

According to the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, the kgoshi will be laid to rest on Saturday, May 27 at the royal house (Moshate cemetery).
