Limpopo hosts netball league

Limpopo hosted the opening week of the 2023 Telkom Netball League at the Ngwako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Seshego outside Polokwane.

A total of 15 teams from all over the country took part in the games, which began on Thursday, April 27 to Monday, May 1. It was an electrifying five days of netball. Division one defending champions, the Gauteng Golden Fireballs sent a strong message to all their opponents by winning all four of their matches, which made them the log leaders on eight points. Southern Stings and Crinums ended second and third respectively after winning all their three matches with six points each, the goal difference separated the two teams.

The Tornados are log leaders in the second division, on six points after winning all three games, followed by the Diamonds also on six points. In third place is the Sunbirds with five points. The Limpopo Boababs team had to settle for fourth position in the second division on four points after winning two of their three matches, and Lilies ended at the bottom of the log in the second division after losing all their games. Last season’s winners in division two, the Eastern Cape Aloes, who were promoted to the first division, struggled as they lost all their games and trailed behind in sixth position.

The league will resume on Friday, June 2 at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria. Acting MEC for Sport, Mavhungu LeruleRamakhanya formed part of the official opening ceremony. The MEC said it is a great victory for South Africa, to see this female-dominated sport, netball, having such a prestigious league that is currently ongoing. “The presence of this sport in our communities should change lives and inspire communities to rally behind its programmes and activities,” she said. The country will be hosting the 2023 Netball World Cup in July, led by the president of Netball South Africa and Africa, Cecilia Molokoane.
