Marula festivities in full swing

Festivities for the annual Marula Festival have officially kicked off. Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor, Merriam Malatji, hosted a welcoming gala dinner at Borwa Lifestyle Centre on Friday, April 14.

She expressed her excitement about the event, as she believes it will boost the local economy and especially empower small business owners. She also encouraged people to buy tickets at Computicket to be part of the flagship event. The dinner was also attended by the MEC for Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet), Rodgers Monama, and Mopani District Municipality Mayor, Pule Shayi among others.

The festival opened with an open-air youth movement concert which took place on Saturday, April 15 at Impala Stadium, features among other artists King Monada, Master KG, Musa Keys, Lady Shiks, Sido and Manana, Ma Joy, Ntombi Ya Mutsonga, many more. Although the concert had an exciting line-up many people called it unsuccessful as there were not many people in the crowd. According to Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA), there are rumours of groups around Phalaborwa calling for people to attend the festival without entry tickets.

“It is also alleged that another festival has been organised to counter the Marula Festival,” LTA stated. In previous years local residents have complained about noise during the festivities and suggested that the event be hosted elsewhere. Despite this, the event promises to be a thriller.

The Marula Open Air Concert will take place on Saturday, April 22 at the Impala Stadium, which features great artists such as Winnie Mashaba, Dr. Tumi, Makhadzi with Penny Penny, Mahlatse the Vocal, Thapelo Molomo, Malondolo, Henny C, Rapson Rambuwani and many more. The Sunday Soul Session event will conclude the Marula Festival festivities on April 24 at Wildevye Park.
