Tzaneen crime statistics show an increase in rape cases
Although there is still a lot to be done to combat crime, the Tzaneen Police Station has done fairly well in their fight against crime
This is according to 2022/2023 second quarter crime statistics that were released on Wednesday, November 23 by the South African Minister of Police, Bheki Cele in Pretoria.The statistics were recorded between July 1 and September 30 this year.
Tzaneen Police Station recorded two cases of murder, which is one count higher when compared to the same period in 2021.
Reported rape cases have increased by 90% from 10 to 19 cases.
Sexual offences increased by 50% from 14 cases in 2021 to 21 cases this year.
Common robbery went up by 107.7% from 13 to 27 reported cases.
Meanwhile, robbery at non-residential areas has declined by 71.7% and reported stock theft also went down by 20%.

Car-jacking incidences remain the same with only one case reported.
According to Brig Edward Masinamela, Tzaneen Police Station commander, they have been working hard to alleviate crime in the region.
Masinamela mentioned that currently business robberies are a problem within the precinct, as more and more business owners report cases of robbery.
During the minister’s release of the new statistics, he expressed his concern about the rate at which women are abused, raped and violated throughout South Africa.
More than 25 000 cases of violence against women were reported nationally between July and September.
“Some of these women are unfortunately killed by the people they know, love and trust,” said Cele.
“Over 13 000 women were victims of assault with intend to cause grievous bodily harm, 1 277 were victims of attempted murdered and 989 were murdered, 10 000 rape cases were reported nationwide during this period,” Cele said.
“While the overview of these crime statistics may be disheartening at face value, they should not make us lose confidence in our endeavor to fight crime,” Cele said.
He concluded by stating that the inclusion of 5000 more police officials in December will intensify police visibility and contribute to crime prevention during the festive season and beyond.
