Xitsonga Music Awards an explosion of fun

Gospel star, Themba Nyathi was the biggest winner at the Xitsonga Music Awards hosted by Munghana Lonene FM (ML FM) on Saturday, November 5 at Nkowankowa Stadium.

He walked away with R30 000 and a trophy for his song ‘Akuna tlhari’ which was named the Best Xitsonga Popular Song of the Year. He thanked his fans for voting for him and ML FM for their continuous support. Apart from Nyathi, the other big winner was Oscar Makumu for winning the Best Xitsonga Album and also walked away with a R30 000 cash prize and a trophy. Dr Sophie was the only artist who won more than one award, she walked away with two awards for The Best Xitsonga Newcomer Artist and Best Xitsonga Female.

At the Xitsonga Music Awards which was held in Nkowankowa over the weekend were Matimu Masilane, Rose Tshabalala (ML FM’s senior producer continuity), Malwandla Maluleke of Malwandla Lifestyle Events and Catering, Divine Makhubele of Thedivinestyle and Moses Mohale. Tzaneen-based duo group, the Daniel Brothers were ecstatic after winning the Best Disco/Dance Group. This was their second award in the last month, in October they won the Best Afro Soul Album at the South African Traditional Achievement (Awards) at the Mbombela Stadium. The event saw music lovers attending in great numbers to enjoy the prestigious occasion. Many have deemed the awards a great success since there was no violence reported or any major incident that could have made the event a failure.

The awards were a partnership between the radio station and the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, which will continue to present the event in the next three years to come. Some of the sponsors included Standard Bank Limpopo and Professor Sylvester Hlati. Some of the artists who performed on the day included DJ Mufhudhisi, Mr. Bow, Ps Lunghi Ndala, Ps Donation, Henny C, and many others. The festivities began on Friday at the gala dinner which was only by invitation.

At the event, the station honoured Sunglen Chavalala, Jeff Maluleke, Vuyelwa, and Dr. Joe Shirimani, handing them lifetime achievement awards. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries which included, the MEC for COGSTHA, Basikopo Makamu; MEC for LEDET, Rodgers Monama; Public Works MEC, Nkakareng Rakgoale; MEC for Sports, Arts, and Culture, Nakedi Kekana among others.
