R17 million for Hoedspruit water project

The Executive Mayor of the Mopani District Municipality (MDM), Pule Shayi, said they have allocated a budget of R17 million for the Hoedspruit Bulk Water Supply.

He was saying this during the MDM’s State of the District Address, which was held at the Council Chambers in Giyani, where he was addressing different stakeholders. He said that they will also begin with work on the Zandspruit bulk pipeline project where, they have set aside a budget of R3 million. “We have been to The Oaks and Finale, and our people are at last benefiting from the Mametja Sekororo Regional Water Scheme.

“We are not pleased with the progress on phase 1b of this project, which is about the refurbishment of the clear water rising main to Willows, Santeng. The construction of the pump station in Santeng has also not moved at the desired pace and we commit to paying special attention to this project,” he said. The Executive mayor also stated that Maruleng Mayor, Tsheko Musolwa has set aside R10 million for the construction of low-level bridges.

Mayor Musolwa will also rehabilitate the Ga-Sekororo road with a budget of R7,6 million. He will also implement a project to upgrade from gravel to paving, the willows access road with a budget of R12 million. “The rehabilitation of Metz access road will also happen this financial year. In ward 6, we have the enabled internal street project with a budget of R12,8 million. “The Kampersrus road rehabilitation will also happen this financial year with a budget of R10 million, he added.

Some of the different water projects that they are busy with within the five local municipalities in the district includes in Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality they are implementing the Lulekani-Benfarm Water Scheme Project with a budget of R60 million starting this financial year.

He has also said that the communities of Maseke and Boyelang will have a consistent supply of water by end of December this year. In the Greater Letaba Municipality, during the 2021/22 financial, they spent R26 million as part of phase 2A of the Sekgosese Ground Water Scheme and 19 SMMEs are benefiting from that project.

An amount of R15 million is set aside for the Rotterdam Ground Water Scheme Project and they will spend R3,5 million on Sefofotse to Ditshosini Bulk Water Supply. In the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, the Lephephane bulk water project with an amount of R50 million set to begin during this financial year.

He has also assured the people of Giyani that they will have water by end of September. In terms of sanitation, he mentioned that about 96.5% of people in Mopani have sanitation. In reaching out to rural communities, at least 6852 households are set to benefit from this (VIP toilets) programme as concluded in the 2021/22 financial year.

The rural household sanitation project budget in the different municipalities is as follows; R2,7 million for Maruleng , R12,2 million for Tzaneen, R6,2 million for Letaba, R12,5 million for Giyani, and R33,2 million for Ba-Phalaborwa. The Executive Mayor also touched on some of the road projects and local economic development projects they are busy with within the district. He further explained that 330 households have benefitted from the disaster relief efforts during the 2021/22 financial year. He concluded by thanking all stakeholders who they have been working with.
