Foundation helps school girls through spelling bee
The B-Square Foundation hosted a spelling bee competition at Relela Community Hall recently.
Eight schools were competing against each other, four from both Sekororo and Bolobedu. Sekororo learners scooped all the first prizes in all the competitions outshining the Bolobedu learners. The organisation has been working with the eight schools since its inception in 2016.
It is a non-profit organisation which aims to empower disadvantaged school girls in Limpopo, mainly focussing on learners from grade 6 to grade 12. It was founded by Bafedile Sakuneka, Ginny Mahasha and Nkoko Sekete.
“We aim to achieve empowerment through annual educational events such as spelling bee competitions, maths olympiads, educational ‘Amazing Race’ competitions, a mentorship programme, and running annual sanitary pad initiatives. “What makes our spelling bee different is that we incorporate other home languages.

“It’s our vision to expand our spelling bee to include multiple languages in the near future. At the moment we are focussing on English and Sepedi words,” explained Sakuneka. There were knockout rounds for three groups.
The groups were structured as follows: junior group (grade 6 and 7), intermediate group (grade 8 and 9), and senior group (grade 10 and 11). Mahlogonolo Shai from Kobjaname Primary School won the junior category, Tshegofatsho Shai from Mmalesiba High School won the intermediate group and Maathari Komana from Rakgolokwana High School was the senior group winner.
First prize winners walked away with a Nokia C20 Smartphone, diary, R100 airtime, cosmetic care package, and a chocolate bar. The second position winners received a scientific calculator, diary, paper folder, blue pens, colour pens, highlighters, cosmetic care packages, and chocolate.
The third position winners won a diary, paper folder, blue pens, colour pens, cosmetic care packages, and a chocolate bar each. Follow the organisation on the social media pages, The B-Square Foundation on Facebook, and @thebsquarefoundation on Instagram.
