16 Days of Activism: How and where to get help when in need

Daleen Smit of SAVF in Tzaneen talks in detail about the no violence campaign against women and children..

As we enter 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children (25 November – 10 December), the spotlight once again falls on domestic violence in our society. Although the campaign mostly focuses on women and children, it must be noted that men can also be victims of domestic violence, and that they have the same right to protection as women and children. We should all work together to end domestic violence in our society.

Warning signs to look out for is: If they seem fearful of their partner; spend less time with family and friends; often belittled or criticised by their partner; partner is jealous possessive and or aggressive; have become unusually quiet or withdrawn and have physical injuries such as bruises and broken bones. Domestic violence can take several forms: Physical abuse; emotional abuse (destruction of your self-worth); sexual abuse; financial abuse, psychological abuse (instilling fear in a person).

What stops women or men from speaking up? • Sense of loyalty to the abuser. • A sense of shame or feeling responsible for the abuse. • A believe that they can change the abuser’s behaviour. • We feel unable due to isolation and fear of not being believed. • Other victims may remain with their abusers out of fear for their own futures. Still others stay with their abusers in an attempt to gain control over the severity or frequency of their abuse.

What can I do if I am being abused? • Don’t suffer in silence, seek help. • Talk to someone you can trust. • Remember that it is not your fault. • Get help – apply for a protection order at your nearest magistrate’s court and lay a criminal charge against the abuser.
