Local woman and her mother make theme parties easy

Hosting a themed costume party in Tzaneen no longer requires locals to go online or travel out of town to get a costume.

The owner of Wannabe Costume Pot, Rose Vosloo, is Tzaneen’s very own queen of costume parties and she will sort you out with whatever you need for your event. She has every costume and props one can think of and should she not have what you need, she can easily make it for you from scratch.

For Rose, having a costume shop is not something that has been in any of her plans, everything happened naturally. The mother of four boys lost her husband when her youngest son was just eight years old. “When my boys turned 21 we were always having themed costume parties at the house. “When we moved to Tzaneen seven years ago from Johannesburg, I had a box full of costumes,” she said.

Rose told the Herald that she then decided to start the business which has now grown more than she had ever imagined. After her mother, Fatima Junqueira, retired in Phalaborwa, she joined Rose in Tzaneen and now helps with the business. The two design and supply wonderful costumes for both children and adults for birthday parties, year-end functions, school theme days and concerts.

When asked what she enjoys most about her work, Rose said the more complicated the costume, the more exciting it is to create. “It’s also very rewarding when my creations win the best dressed,” she said.

Her favourite theme is medieval or18th century. “Imagine a time where you still have a sense of space and where the distances between fortified towns are measured in days, open fields and wild forests, prairies and pristine waters; all populated by elves, fairies, demons, monsters and other-worldly creatures and where time is announced only by the stroke of church bells, echoing in silent alleys and over hilly farms,” Rose said.

She advised prospective customers to inquire three to four weeks prior to their function. “All our costumes (as authentic as you will ever be able to get) are handmade by me and my mother and are not mass-produced,” she said.

A happy client could not stop praising Wannabe Costume Pot for supplying the people of Tzaneen with all their function needs. “She is local and we must support local, she is affordable compared to getting something online,” said the happy client.
