Letaba VW Crew changing lives

The Letaba VW Crew is more than just a social club, it is also making an impact on local communities through their charity work.

They demonstrated this by donating groceries to impoverished families in Nkowankowa and Lusaka recently.

They took their charitable efforts to another level when they decided to start building a five-room house for the Chauke family, which was staying in a one-roomed shack.

Hellen Chauke, a single mother of five, was living in a dilapidated shack with all her children.

She told the Herald that she considers the VW Crew as her angels from above.

“These young men came to my home and gave my family groceries, without knowing us. “A few days later they arrived with cement and started to build a house, I can never thank them enough.

“They are my answered prayers, God used them to change my life for the better,” she said.

Hellen and her deceased partner who are originally from Mozambique, came to the country in 2003 while she was pregnant with their first child.

After her partner’s passing a few years ago, she was left alone to fend for their children.

“I kept on crying out to God, asking why He has forsaken me and my family?

“This now proves to me that he was listening to my prayers all along and He was waiting for the right time to bless me,” she further said.

The crew was founded by Lesley Shivuri two months ago. He recruited three of his friends, Morris Hlungwane, Lelani Mathebula and Malcom Moyo to be part of his vision.

It was initially called Dan VW Crew, but Thulani Mboweni, a mutual friend suggested that they change it to Letaba VW Crew in order for it to include the people of the Mopani district.

“We meet every Sunday at a pub of our choice, where we go with the aim of supporting the business.

These businesses reimburse the club the money spent which they in turn use for the charity work, explained Shivuri.

They also have a team of entertainers who travel with them, including well-known comedians, Zali and Matopisi and other artists.

Shiburi said he is grateful to his team for giving their time and money.

He further acknowledged the people who donated towards the building of the Chauke house.

“We hope to build more houses in the neighbouring villages soon,” he concluded. For more information follow Letaba VW Crew on Facebook.
