RMP in development for Tzaneen

The Department of Water and Sanitation have appointed Engineerex, a Johannesburg-based company, to develop a Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the Tzaneen Dam.

Similar RMP’s are being developed for dams across South Africa.

An Authorities Meeting was held on January 29 in the Minitzani Hall, which major roleplayers including representatives from the Departments of Water and Sanitation, Tourism, Agriculture, Education, Public Works, South

African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), and Engineerex attended.

A RMP is a plan that aims to manage the utilisation of water resources and the surrounding environment in ways to promote community participation and beneficiation, environmental sustainability and to unlock the socio-economic potential of the water resource.

The purpose of the meeting was to identify strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities during the development of the RMP.

Stakeholders and the public will be consulted throughout the project to ensure a common goal is reached.

The RMP is developed over seven phases. After the last phase is complete and the final RMP is approved, the institutional proposal will be established and formalised.

The plan for Tzaneen is still in phase two and three which entails effectively addressing the objectives of the project, investigating possible legal, social and biophysical challenges of hindrances that may influence the development and implementation of the RMP, clarifying objectives to be met by the RMP and consulting with stakeholders to ascertain a common goal.
