Winter is coming …

The mornings and evenings are much colder and daytime is just a reminder that summer will be a distant memory soon. The mornings and evenings are much colder and daytime is just a reminder that summer will be a distant memory soon.

Everywhere we are starting to see woolly tights and jerseys, boots and the quintessential winter accessory, scarves.

Yes, dear readers, winter is coming.

Are you winter ready? Because I am not. But I am not worried about myself and my family, we will adapt quickly.

I am worried about the less fortunate, wondering how they are going to make it through another winter … and this winter things will be very different.

They are not as fortunate as you and I. They are probably not worrying about the latest winter fashion trends, but instead worrying about whether their shoes and clothes will make it through another winter, not to mention worrying about having enough food to sustain them.

Winter can be a harsh reality for many, especially those who cannot fend for or speak for themselves. Many animal shelters across the West Rand are dreading winter. This year, people will be tightening their belts, because of the recent VAT increase and the incredibly high petrol price. This will result in donations to shelters being pushed into the background.

As a result, the community might be left sitting with a problem when winter is in full swing.

I would like to encourage you to think ahead and support the local organisations, shelters and charities in our community. Your smallest act of kindness will mean the world to them. Already, many churches and community centres are planning fundraisers and I urge you to support them.

Visit the News’ website and search for the following organisations and help them prepare for winter:

• The Cradle of Hope shelter for women and children

• The Tower of Life homeless shelter for men and women

• The Bethany House Trust orphanage

• The 9th Day Animal Shelter, Husky Heaven, Owl Rescue Centre and the SPCA Roodepoort, which also services the Krugersdorp area

• The Mug and Tree Community Centre

• Various old age homes like Golden Age Village, the Pioneer, Memorial and Jack Cotton flats and Môreglans Old Age Home

All it takes is to make a small difference that will go a long way. Be that change you want to see.

Until next week, keep warm, Krugersdorp.
