Even though I just recently joined the road cycling community, I sympathise with them whenever I receive complaints about motorists driving dangerously around them.

Why? Because I experienced it first-hand when I took part in the Wilro Lions Cycle Challenge two weekends ago.

The cycle race had no road closures and although there were many officials on duty helping to regulate the traffic, that did not make it any less scary.

Cars, trucks and taxis were constantly speeding past us. This time round, the taxis are to be excused, because the scariest culprits were motorists in cars.

While I was cycling, most of the drivers who passed us did not really adhere to the ‘Think Bike’ initiative of driving at least 1,5m away from a cyclist. Some drivers came speeding past at such a pace that I almost lost my balance, causing me to swerve. Luckily, there was no other oncoming traffic.

Trucks are a whole different story on their own. I did not notice any of their drivers speeding but they were not slowing down either.

To me, this was an eye-opener, and I am so thankful that everyone who participated finished safely.

I also know that some cyclists tend to take over the road and make the lives of motorists difficult, especially when trying to navigate on narrow roads.

My only request is that we, both motorists and cyclists, obey the rules of the road and show some courtesy when approaching each other.

We need to remember that bicycles were there before motor-driven vehicles. We can both co-exist.

I know that I will be courteous when approaching cyclists in future. The question is, will you?

Until next week, take it easy on the road, Krugersdorp.
