Just take care of them … it’s that simple

Last night I realised what a joy it really is to be the owner of a pet.

I have two cats and even though they drive me crazy sometimes with their excessive grooming rituals, scratching of everything they can get the paws on, fussy eating habits and 3am sprints down the hall, I would not have it any other way.

I love my two cats so much it hurts!

During the last few of weeks, I noticed an immense influx of posts on Facebook about unwanted pets. I am shocked at the number of pets found dumped next to the road and local animal shelters pleading for help.

And on top of everything else, the National Lottery has withdrawn their funding to the SPCA. Dare I say it, but animal welfare in South Africa is literally a dying breed and it is extremely sad.

I, myself, feel so helpless because the need is so big.

Have we failed as a community or are we so swept up by all the other issues that we tend to forget about those who cannot fend for themselves?

But there is a solution and the sooner we realise that this is a problem we need to face as a community, the better for everyone involved.

We need to start taking the ownership of a pet more seriously. Perhaps government should bring in a pet licensing system? It’s a living and breathing being that needs to be taken care of, after all.

Let’s start supporting local initiatives by spreading the word, helping with fundraising and making sure our own pets are taken care of.

I’ve said it before, and I will say it over and over again … the best helping hand you will find is at the end of your arm.

Let’s be the change we want to see in Krugersdorp. Stop with the bickering and start taking action.

I know I will, but the question remains, will you?

Until next week, just take care of your pets, Krugersdorp, it’s that simple!
