Here we are again at the end of another year.

This year was truly one for the books. With all the mishaps and misfortune of 2017 … there were some remarkable happenings as well.

As we venture out to our family and friends during this festive time, we should also not forget about what brought us together – we should remember the reason for the season.

Pastor Gerrit Mes summed it up so perfectly in his column in last week’s edition of the News. I feel I need to reiterate what he said.

“Christmas is not primarily about getting. The spirit of Christmas should primarily be about giving. Isn’t it the Bible that tells us, ‘It is better to give than to receive’?” Pastor Mes asked.

Every week you page through the newspaper and read stories of people giving to the less fortunate. But does charity not start at home? What are we giving back to our families? What message of Christmas are we carrying over to the people we love the most?

My Christmas wish this year is that my family, friends and colleagues receive peace, love and prosperity. To be more specific, I just want everyone to be happy.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who plays a part in my life. Thank you for enriching it with your presence and perseverance.

To our loyal readers, I want to wish you a merry Christmas and a joyous New Year!

Let’s remember the reason, and let’s enjoy this season responsibly.

Until next year, take care, Krugersdorp.
