To help inspire young minds

There is nothing more satisfying than helping to inspire the youth. I recently had the privileged of talking to a handful of aspiring journalists-to-be from Krugersdorp High School. I recently had the privileged of talking to a handful of aspiring journalists-to-be from Krugersdorp High School. I was approached by the school’s media and marketing person who asked if I would come and explain the world of local journalism to the school’s media students.

She gave me an hour to cram the almost 10 years’ experience I have here at the News into the session.

The thought was daunting. How do I tell future journalists about what its like to serve a community … in about 60 minutes or so?

And then it hit me … just take it home.

Deep inside us all is a budding journalist. What makes us all citizen journalists is the very place we live in. Some chose to pursue it while others go in different directions. What affects me will affect my neighbour and as a local journalist your very first instinct should be to serve your community with whatever journalistic means you have at your disposal.

As journalists we consider ourselves the voice of the community. We are in the community, for the community, by the community. The stories we write also serve as answers to our very own questions.

I would like to thank KHS for having me and considering me as an important stakeholder in our community, especially when it comes to publishing the truth.

Until next week … remember to always be an inspiration, Krugersdorp.
