Why I can’t wait for Spring

Is it just me, or has this year’s Winter been an absolute disappointment?

It was barely cold – the morning and evening chills just confused us while we reverted back to Summer mode during the day.

Also, it’s like nothing much has changed. Everything still looks the same outside.

I can remember when I was a child, I would wake up in the morning before school and just stare at our lawn which was covered in what I thought was snow. It was amazing!

My brother and I would then walk the few hundred metres or so to school in full Eskimo-gear. I loved it. I loved Winter.

I love dressing in jerseys, boots, jackets and scarves. I am more equipped for Winter than I am for any other season of the year.

But this Winter was different. We did not even change the sheets on our bed to Winter sheets. We just continued as normal, and it’s sad.

What comes after Winter is renewal, change, new beginnings and of course, Spring. But it does not feel this way and I think it is because we are so consumed with what is going on in our lives … we have forgotten to stop and smell the blossoms.

The world is in a bad place. I do not have to remind you of the ongoing terrorist attacks, racism outbursts, downward-spiralling economy, water wastage woes and heartache we see every day.

But maybe I should remind you about what is happening outside. Because that is what I did this morning. I stopped and just looked.

I saw the change I was longing for and I realised I might have gone through the whole of Winter without even knowing it because I was so consumed by everyday life.

Don’t be like me, because you might blink and it will be too late. My advice would be to just stop for a minute and take it all in.

Until next week … take a breather, Krugersdorp.
