Congratulations!

A hearty congratulations to our Olympic medal winners!

You make your country and fellow South Africans very proud!

I also want to say congratulations to Krugersdorp’s Shaun Keeling for winning, with his rowing partner, a silver medal in the men’s coxless pairs event, with a time of 7:02,51.

My husband and I have been watching the Rio Olympics religiously. Since its opening ceremony on 5 August, our television has not been allowed to show anything else.

Schedules have been rearranged and our alarm clock set to wake us in time for the most important events, even if those events take place at 2am!

As my husband says, this only happens once every four years and a little leeway should be made for it.

What do I like most about the Olympics? The athletics is by far the most gripping to watch. I’m sure our neighbours did not appreciate my husband and I yelling at our TV when Wayde van Niekerk broke the record in the 400m event early on Monday morning.

Nevertheless, Wayde’s victory was a victory shared by everyone and it is something we all desperately needed following the divisiveness of the local elections earlier in August.

Thank you to each and every Olympic athlete for bringing some much needed joy and excitement to our lives.

Good luck to those who still need to compete! My husband and I are right behind you, cheering!

You are waving your flags very high and I for one am proud to say I am South African.

Cue Chariots of Fire as background music … until next week, keep winning Krugersdorp!
