Editor's note

To the ones I love

This week I am dedicating my note to the ones who own my heart: my family.

July is not only a very special month in terms of birthdays and wedding anniversaries, but it is also the month in which several of my loved ones passed away in.

First and foremost, a big congratulations to my parents who are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary this month. You are such a great example to us and we are forever grateful for what you do and mean to us.

Then, to my father, who is celebrating his birthday this month, “Happy birthday, old man!” (Just kidding!) I hope you have a wonderful year ahead, I love you so much!

Then, to my darling sister-in-law who celebrates a milestone birthday this month, happy birthday to you too! You are my person, my best friend and one of the best people I know on God’s green Earth. I owe so much to you!

But with all the happiness comes some sadness. This month marks the first anniversary of my uncle’s death as well as the second anniversary of my grandmother’s death. Two great losses in my family.

As I reminisce about the good times I shared with you both, I am comforted by knowing that you are together in Heaven. I miss you and think about you every day.

For the rest of the country, this month is also the month in which we embrace Nelson Mandela’s vision of unity. Through his memory and legacy we take 67 minutes of our time on 18 July, known in South Africa as Mandela Day, and give back to our communities.

How will you give back this year? Please share your thoughts and ideas with me by leaving a comment.

Until next week, happy July, Krugersdorp!
