Don’t wait, vaccinate!

So this rabies outbreak in Muldersdrift is kind of scary!

Eight reports of animals with the dreaded decease have already been confirmed.

I think it will be just a matter of time before it hits the suburbs of Krugersdorp.

I’ve heard many say that it’s not that serious and that people should not be alarmed. I disagree.

Prevention is better than cure, but if this hits the masses, especially those living in informal settlements, the effects can be severe.

Just to throw some statistics out there; did you know that in unvaccinated humans, rabies is almost always fatal after neurological symptoms have developed. Vaccination after exposure is highly successful in preventing the disease if administered promptly, in general within six days of infection.

I would like to encourage you to take your animals to your nearest vet and get them vaccinated. Alternatively, if the need is big enough, the state veterinarian will host another vaccination campaign.

Until then, take care of each other and your pets.
