Bringing boxing back to its former glory days

The Repeat or Revenge boxing tournament gave the community in Muldersdrift a night to remember and amateurs the opportunity to shine.

Syringa Park was the venue to be at recently during the Repeat or Revenge amateur boxing tournament.

The fight card for the night included 13 fights and certainly delivered on expectations. Weight categories for the sparring bouts ranged from featherweight through to the big boys in the heavyweight division.

Syringa Park co-owner Lisa D’Oliveira said the idea behind showcase sparring tournaments such as these is to breathe new life into the boxing arena and introduce fresh blood as well as interest in the sport. Even former South African Super Welterweight champion Gregory Clark was in attendance.

“The tournament saw friendly sparring bouts among neighbouring Johannesburg clubs including Xpro Boxing, 1 Tribe Boxing, Team Dida and G- G-Force Boxing Academy, with every coach and club manager routing for their fighters to earn incentive medals handed out by the tournament promoter,” she added.

She continued to say that there was also a variety of restaurants and a VIP bar for boxing fans to enjoy a meal and have drinks.

“Youth development and ensuring that the most underprivileged kids are given a chance to learn the noble art of boxing on a big stage. The main goal of initiatives behind boxing club sparring collaborations is to create tangible exposure and interest among the youth and bring boxing back to its former glory days,” Lisa concluded.
