Team West Rand dominates Bill Stewart Tournament

The Proteas team representing the West Rand dominated the Bill Stewart Tournament with an impressive 11 wins and one draw.

The Bill Stewart Primary Schools Football Tournament was the highlight of the school’s football season as the West Rand Primary Schools Football Association emerged victorious, playing an unbeaten 12 games with 11 wins and one draw.

The tournament, which took place in June at Camp Discovery in Dinokeng Game Reserve hosted a variety of teams representing their province. Mason Brown (11), a learner from Florida Park Primary School, was selected to represent the Proteas team.

The Proteas team spent four days at Camp Discovery, where they improved their skills and bonded as a team. Their stay was marked by intense training sessions, strategic team talks and their commitment to winning.

The team’s dominance on the field portrayed their efforts leading up to the tournament, as they outplayed their opponents in every match.

Deon Moyce, chairperson of the West Rand Primary Schools Football Association, commended the players for their consistency even in games where they felt tired.

“Before we went to Camp Discovery, I had a brief conversation with the boys while their parents were also there on the importance of knowing what the goal is for the tournament.

“As much as teams are going to have fun, the teams had to remember the reason why they were there and the work that needed to be done. I was very impressed by how disciplined and focused they were. It is a great representation of the football association.

“The team’s achievement is all the more remarkable considering Mason’s tender age, making him the youngest player in the tournament,” Moyce said.
