Khosa U13 hockey boys go all the way!

Khosa Hockey Club experienced one of their most successful seasons in many years.

Khosa Hockey Club, which is part of the Southern Gauteng Hockey Association (SGHA) club league, has put Krugersdorp on the map by winning the U13 boys league.

Competing against eight other clubs from around Gauteng, the Khosa U13 team went unbeaten to the finals and faced Morningside Country Club (MCC) in the penultimate match on August 10, emerging victorious 2–0. The team faced tough competition from the likes of Wanderers, Jeppe and Crusaders but only conceded one goal the entire season while scoring 34.

To add to this success, their U15 girls scooped third place in their league with a 3–1 victory over GS Hockey Academy Club to make it one of the club’s most successful seasons in many years.

Khosa junior and mini hockey chairperson John Westermeyer said, “The success of these two junior teams is a testament to the growing strength of hockey on the West Rand, which has also seen several of our players achieve district and provincial colours. What makes us most proud is that most of these juniors have been with the club since U7s Minis and have grown with us over the years to become formidable and skilled players.”

He added that Khosa junior and mini hockey have seen their membership base grow sharply by over 32% from the previous year as the sport grows in popularity and parents realise the club hockey gives their players an added advantage over school hockey.

“The U5s and U7s now boast around 45 players alone amongst the 250 members, which bodes well for our future stars,” he concluded.
