Pound for pound, round for round for Vikings

The Vikings Boxing Club is growing from strength to strength and they call on passionate youngsters to join their corner.

Vikings Boxing Club aims to make 2024 their year even if it means going at it round by round.

The club was established in the 1950s and has been running ever since, growing from strength to strength. Today, the club has many boxers who are from all walks of life, young and old who use the sport for either self-defence, self-improvement or discipline. The club has two branches on the West Rand, one in Roodepoort and one at Key West Shopping Centre.

The club over the years has produced some elite boxers according to coach and owner of the club, Phillip du Randt.

He said many of their fighters over the years have proved their worth in various tournaments and have gone on to compete at the highest level. Recently, the club was proud to announce that Leandri Botha became Gauteng Champion. She then went on to compete at the South African Boxing Championships bagging bronze.

“We aim to create many champions. We aim to develop and create boxing talent where youngsters can be the best they can be. Assisting the less fortunate youth and getting them off the streets and involved in sport is another goal,” Phillip said.

Other notable boxers that the club has trained include Gerhard Botes who was an SA Champion and Martin Jakobs who was a South African Lightweight Champion.

Phillip further encourages anyone in town to join their corner and help develop the mentality of champions. They train at Witpoortjie on Mondays and Wednesdays, and at Key West on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00.
