Morgan Moss: A karate force to be reckoned with

Morgan Moss Karate has had many members excel in 2023 and they plan to go even bigger this year.

To say that 2023 has been a dominant year for Morgan Moss Karate would be an understatement.

Students of Morgan Moss Karate once again proved that they are a force to be reckoned with and one of the top clubs on the West Rand. The club produced 46 West Rand regional team members, 43 Gauteng team members, 13 national team members, one third-dan black belt, two second-dan black belts, one first-dan black belt, and six junior black belts last year.

According to head instructor Morgan Moss, the karate club managed this feat by competing in various tournaments including the Karate South Africa Senior (KSA) National Championships held in Port Elizabeth, the KSA Junior National Championships held in Durban, the KSA League Championships held in Bloemfontein and Cape Town, the SA Open in Durban and the Arnold Classic held in Ruimsig. The club was also able to register an astonishing 123 national medals with 57 being gold, 33 silver, and 33 bronze.

Internationally, at least 13 members from the karate club represented the South African Protea National team outside the borders of South Africa.

“These members represented South Africa at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 International Championships held in Harare, Zimbabwe. They also represented the club at the African Beach Games in Tunisia, the UFAK African Championships (Casablanca, Morocco), the WKF World Senior Championships (Budapest, Hungary), and the WKF Series A (Konya, Turkey), across these events we took seven International titles, one silver as well as seven bronze medals.”

Furthermore, Sensei Morgan also travelled to Eswatini (Swaziland) as part of a Commonwealth Karate Federation initiative to assist with coaching the newly formed Eswatini National Karate Federation. In addition, the club also hosted guest instructors from Japan, America, and Hungary.

Last year a new branch in Noordheuwel was opened and the main branch’s new dojo was built in Wilropark. The karate club also ended the year by topping the 2024 West Rand Regional Trials with 54 members being selected to represent their region at the 2024 Gauteng Karate Federation Provincial trials.

This year members of the club are also expected to travel to Namibia, Ghana, Austria, Cyprus, Italy and Japan. The KSA National Protea trials in Bloemfontein are also around the corner.
