Fun indigenous games in Kagiso

Over 500 community members got active at the Kagiso Stadium recently.

Physical health and the preservation of indigenous sports were all part of the day at the Kagiso Sports Complex on October 26. More than 500 people came out to be part of the fun and thrilling sports games and activities that took place.

The sports day was organised by the Community Work Programme (CWP). CWP was established to provide employment safety to members of poor communities by offering them a minimum number of regular days of work each month. It provides a bridging opportunity for unemployed youth and others who are actively looking for employment opportunities.

The programme provides them with extra cash to support them in their search for full-time or part-time employment. Programme participants do community work thereby contributing to improvements that benefit all community members. The theme for many young people was fitness. There were various stakeholders such as the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture who made way for youth to learn and take part in the initiative.

Furthermore, the programme also hopes to bring awareness and preserve indigenous games such as Dibeke in South Africa. CWP Mogale City branch manager Learto Mbonyane added more as to how important it is to preserve indigenous games.

“We not only want the youth to be observant about their health but they also have to uphold their African roots by taking part in these games,” explained Mbonyane.

Many who took part were educated about health and various sports.
