Krugersdorp Bowling Club experiences best-ever season with 17 medals

With Krugersdorp Bowling Club having experienced the best-ever season in its 107-year history, they won't let the grass grow under their feet and have already kicked off the new season with an exciting Gold Rush Tournament.

The 2023/ 24 lawn bowls season kicked off with the exciting Gold Rush Tournament hosted at Krugersdorp Bowling Club (KBC) on October 14 and 15.

Of the 36 teams that competed it was Mark Hankey and his team who came out victorious having beaten Morgan Muvhango and his team by three shots.

Governor of the tournament committee, Andy Selby asked a member of the club, Ken Beveridge, who hosted the first Gold Rush tournament in 1977, to present the trophy to the winners.

The Gold Rush tournament comes at the back of what Krugersdorp Bowling Club spokesperson David Parker described as an excellent 2022/ 23 season. In total, KBC won four gold medals, four silver medals and nine bronze medals during the season.

“It is considered to be KBC’s best season in its 107-year history,” David said.

Reflecting on the 2022/ 23 season, David said the club won three men’s league divisions as well as the ladies’ league division.

At the national competition, Robbie Piketh won the SA Men’s Masters single bronze medal while at the Gauteng Open Robbie Piketh, Stitch Economakis, Glen Minnaar, and Lee Barnet won the gold medal in the men’s fours. Theresa Price, Kathy Maritz, Desiree Steinhobel, and Deirdre van Zyl won the silver medal for ladies’ fours in the same tournament.

At the Sables competitions, the club members took home gold, silver and bronze in the men’s singles, bronze in the men’s pairs, bronze in the men’s trips and bronze in the men’s fours. KBC also had nine members chosen to represent Sables at the national inter-district tournament.

“The district selectors also invited 22 players from KBC to play in the annual Sables Masters Singles tournament where we won two gold, two silver, and four bronze medals.”

According to David, the very successful 2022/ 23 season closed on September 14 with the club’s annual general meeting and Trevor Leader re-elected as the club president. He was joined by several other members from last year’s committee.

Trevor told KBC members that last year was the benchmark and they must now answer the call to improve.
