Plenty of talent on show in 2023 Mayor’s Cup

The new tournament hopes to showcase Mogale City's best football talent says municipal spokesperson.

Soccer players from across Mogale City will be showcasing their talent in the 2023 Mayor’s Cup which lasts until the end of this month.

The tournament kicked off during the weekend of October 14 and saw young and old soccer enthusiasts converging at various identified sports complexes and stadiums for the three-week-long event to be held until October 29. The 2023 Mayor’s Cup was launched on October 4 coinciding with a public draw attended by participating teams and cup role-players.

The tournament sees 13 boys’ soccer teams, 16 master’s soccer teams, eight ladies’ soccer teams, and 32 seniors’ teams competing for top honours.

According to Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, the tournament is a major sports development instrument in Mogale City.

“Beyond unearthing diamonds from townships and rural spaces and elevating them to better sports stages, the cup aims to develop local sports, encourage a healthy lifestyle amongst youth and adults, drive social cohesion, and get our youth off the streets.

“Recent results saw the Munsieville-based team The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly beat Drift Aces by 11 goals to nil. It was also one of the opening games of the masters category held at the Swaneville Sports Complex while at the Kagiso Stadium, Ratanang Masters saw off Kagiso Extension 12 Maters 2–0,” Mahlangu said.

In encouraging locals to attend and enjoy these games, it should be noted that the tournament will also be played on weekdays at Kagiso Stadium. While the winners will receive cash prizes, trophies, and medals, all players are eager to showcase their talent to attract talent scouts for greener pastures.

The 2023 Mayor’s Cup is the first soccer tournament councillor Thupane has hosted since the birth of the Government of Local Unity, comprising of ANC, EFF and ATM.
