Team Rage rake in the medals

A number of Team Rage Kickboxing Club members excelled in Potch while another member won his MMA fight at the Gladiator Championship Fighting tournament.

Fighters from the Team Rage Kickboxing Club bagged gold and silver medals at the Great North 2 tournament in Potchefstroom recently.

This was one of three large tournaments hosted throughout the year. If a fighter competes in all three they can be selected for the Gauteng team and ultimately the South African team.

The five fighters who excelled in the semi and low kick category in Potchefstroom are the 13-year-old Linzy Henning who won two gold medals, 17-year-old Reinhardt Labuschagne who also won two gold medals, the 21-year-old Estiaan Labuschagne who won two silver medals, 30-year-old PJ Brits who won one silver medal, and 15-year-old Kaiwyn Labuschagne who did not win a medal but did well considering it was the first time in three years that he competed.

All the fighters are now preparing for the next Great North tournament.

The 30-year-old PJ who has been part of the club for the past four years won his MMA fight at the Gladiator Championship Fighting tournament on June 24 at Carousel. He fought against Krishan Gubgaroo in the Amateur light heavyweight division and won with a guillotine choke. Although he enjoys MMA fighting, kickboxing helps him with the basics.

PJ wants to make a name for himself in MMA and hopefully move up from amateur to professional and later compete in UFC. He and Estiaan will both be competing in the Grassroots 4 MMA event on September 24 at Northlands Corner in Northriding.
