Conquering the continent is young kickboxers’ goal

'We are very proud of the fighters, their dedication and the effort they put in. They practise six hours a week.' — Sensei

After dominating the South African kickboxing scene two fighters from the Ring Contact Fighting Art (RCFA) Kickboxing club will soon be going up against the best in Africa.

Sensei Jorgen Cieslik from the RCFA club explained that Michael Sonnendecker and Liam van Zyl have fought their way to the top positions in the country and on Saturday, August 27 they will be fighting in the African Championships.

In order to qualify for the African Championships you have to be in the first or second position in your division nationally. Liam and Michael will both be competing in the under 32 division against fighters from all over Africa.

The championships will be held on the East Rand as South Africa is also the host for this year’s championships.

We are extremely proud; it is a honour because the competition is tough. We are very proud of the fighters, their dedication and the effort they put in. They practise six hours a week,” Sensei Jorgen said.

Although everyone is rooting for these two champs they are not the only fighters making a name for themselves at the club. Five of the RCFA fighters also recently competed in Potchefstroom at the Great North 2 tournament and the fighters raked in the medals.

Michael won two gold medals, Tadian Maritz brought home two bronze medals, Janneke du Preez won two bronze medals and MJ du Toit brought home two gold medals while Liam won two silver medals.

Many of the club’s fighters will also be competing in the Highveld at War Championships in Lydenburg on Saturday, August 27. Sensei Jorgen wished all their fighters good luck with their tournament and invited everyone who wants to join their club to come.

He explained that they do not only work with professional fighters and that all their fighters had to start from the bottom to get to where they are today, so everyone is welcome – even if you have never done kickboxing before. He can be contacted on 066 228 8932.
