The annual Best of the West Festival once again saw hundreds of rugby players from all over the country fighting for the ultimate winner’s title over the Easter weekend.
On 24, 26 and 28 March Krugersdorp High School (KHS) hosted the festival where eight under 14 and 12 first teams participated.
“The festival has grown from strength to strength and it is always great to see both old and new faces at the event,” Lauren Jooste-Coetsee, KHS’ marketing director said.
Once again, St Georges from Harare, the Monnas Kwaggas, Hoërskool Roodepoort and Hoërskool Dinamika provided spectators with entertaining rugby and a contagious spirit.
But for the second year in a row, the Pretoria Boys High School Invitation side won all three of their games.
“The highlight of the weekend was the nail biter game between hosts, Krugersdorp High School and the Pretoria Boys Invitational side,” she said.
Unfortunately the hosts narrowly lost 18-12.
This year Hoërskool Linden, Hillcrest from Zimbabwe and Hoërskool Ermelo who stunned the crowds with their high levels of rugby skills, were welcomed at the festival.
The Hillcrest College side took a beating on Good Friday (25 March) when the Monnas Kwaggas side pulled through at half time with a score of 6-24, in favour of the Kwaggas. The game ended with a staggering score of 6-41.
One of the toughest matches took place between Linden and Ermelo, with Ermelo coming out victorious after a tough 60 minutes of play.
“Ermelo won the Espirit de Corp for the weekend for displaying a true level of sportsmanship at all times, both on and off the field,” Lauren concluded.
The finals scores for the Krugersdorp first teams were:
• Hillcrest vs Monnas Kwaggas 6-41
• KHS vs Jabulani Rugby Club 26-17
• Monnas Kwaggas vs Ermelo 7-13
• Monnas Kwaggas vs Dinamika 14-8
• KHS vs Hillcrest 19-10
• KHS vs Pretoria Boys Invitation 12-18
